If you think I was a kid who loved to read, you’d be right, but that doesn’t just mean I was reading, like, Newbery Award nominated prestigious children’s novels. Because in my experience, most kids who love to read are more gourmand than gourmet. I was also reading:

* Class rosters. I begged my teachers for these. I wanted to try to memorize everyone’s middle names.

* Similarly, old yearbooks. I liked judging whether people’s names matched their faces and making up different names for them if they did. I also loved reading baby name books and making lists of names I liked.

.* The personals section of the newspaper. I liked picturing the people as they described themselves and imagining which combination of people on the page might like each other.

* The ingredients of food packages. Not even for any real informational reason, I just really liked certain fantasy-sounding words like thiamine and riboflavin.

* An old World Book Encyclopedia from the 1970s. I would sneak out of bed to read it because the bookshelf was near my bedroom door and I could crawl to it without making the floor creak. My favorite entries were the ones about Hawaii and tigers. I kinda developed a ritual of rereading the Hawaii article when I had read a scary book before bed and needed to calm my brain down.

* My dad’s Dave Barry and Woody Allen humor books and also transcripts of all of the Monty Python’s Flying Circus episodes. This is probably why my sense of humor has been so weird from such a young age.

* The part of the church hymnal with ceremonies for baptisms, weddings, and funerals. I liked to imagine them.

* Wine catalogs at friends’ houses. The descriptions of the wines seemed so poetic and abstract. I also liked when they said “fruit on the nose” because I pictured a dog balancing a whole piece of fruit on its nose.

* My parents’ parenting books. I liked to see if I was exhibiting developmentally appropriate behavior. I am not 100% sure if doing that is, in fact, developmentally appropriate behavior.

* Those little brochures advertising various roadside attractions and tourist activities at rest shops. I would grab as many as possible when we stopped to use the bathroom on a road trip. Also, travel guides in general.

* I checked out the entire “unexplained” section of the library over the course of third grade. (Dewey decimal 001.9.) Ask little me about Project Blue Book, I guess.

* I LOVED party planning books, especially ones with highly specific themed parties that seemed impractical to put on in real life like a whole chess-themed party culminating in a game of human chess, complete with lemon chess pie for dessert.

* Seed packets. I find the writing style of these very endearing. It always sounds so affectionate toward the plants.

* My grandma’s Reader’s Digest magazines, which felt like Russian roulette because they sometimes published disturbing articles that gave me nightmares. (Reader’s Indigestion?) I especially vividly remember a feature on adopted kids who need to wear Ilizarov apparatuses to straighten their limbs because they became malformed due to severe neglect at orphanages.

* For some reason, I loved reading restaurant menus and imagining what kind of food different fictional characters would order from there.

* And last but certainly not least, because I think this is a relatable one: the AMERICAN GIRL CATALOG! No, I never had an American Girl doll, but getting the catalog was a source of much excitement.

My thoughts on Animation Vs. Coding

I LOVE it !

I like how it shows the different uses of coding with the uses of different libraries. I also like how it's in Python, the most used programming language. And how it can be used to do incredibly complex things at the end of the episode.

However I do think this is the weakest of the Animation Vs Education episode we got so far.

The first reason for this is the time. It's only 8:28 minutes, it's litteraly shorter than Animation VS Geometry ! Now don't get me wrong I don't think the longer is the better, far from it. But with a topic as vast as coding is, I think it's kinda sad we didn't get more.

The second reason is because of the narrative structure of the episode : It's Animation Vs Math, but worse.

Let me explain : Act 1 Yellow/Orange explore their new environnement while learning the base knowledge they'll need in this new world. Act 2 an inhabitant of this world interrupts them and a fight ensue, while fighting they learn more and more complex knowledge but still quite simple. Act 3 They're now fighting with really complicated concepts and in their conflict, they'll end up destroying the world with a nuke/a big laser. And in act 4 they discover they've gone too far and become friends with the episodes antagonist.

Of course there's difference, but essentially it's basically the same

With near half the time AvMath had, this episode is really fast. There's no pause between the fight to let Yellow truly learn the intermediate knowledge. Why is Yellow capable of what they're doing in the end ? When did they learned how a function or a class worked ? The computer (we need a name for this lil guy) was the one coding all the time when Yellow was just Interrupting it or doing minor adjustements. How did Yellow went from playing with a print and two variables to doing a whole neural network ? ("but you see there's a time lapse between when they started and finished the neural network, they learned during that time" No they didn't, they immediatly started like they knew exactly what to do and not experimenting. Yellow didn't learn there, they already knew)

And with these two reasons combined, I think that's why Animation Vs Coding feels less mastered than the previous AvE episodes.

I still love this episode as someone who loves coding, but with previous episodes being such bangers it's normal that this one was gonna have some flaws. As I said, coding is a big of a topic to choose, so of course things would've been missing and all.

Plus the music is cool (It's from the same guy who made AvGeometry's. What a banger)

wwx is sooo smart! in a modern setting, what subject do you think he would teach? what about in college?

seriously, i can wax poetic about wwx’s intelligence, ingenuity and smartness any day!! and ooooh, your question puts me in a bind because i cannot just name one subject. i think wei wuxian is good at too many things and the younger generations deserve to have his mentorship for an array of subjects. but i’m gonna try my best to just discuss one for this post!

see, i don’t want to mention fine arts because i think wwx would be a hobbyist about it and prefer to be one of those guys hopping around museums and galleries and curating a small but insightful review blog to engage with that side of the arts. an aspect of him that his students would probably find a bit later once they go stalking their professor’s social media profiles (which wwx would be VERY lowkey about) and find that, oh, the cool professor is so much cooler still.

also, because this got me thinking way too much, before we get to the subject, imagining wwx as a full time faculty member–i’ll go out on this fanfic fuelled limb and say he would totally be the teacher coordinator for a university play and/or the debate society! the latter especially, because if the second siege showed us nothing else, it made clear that wwx knows how to frame his arguments logically w/o getting too personal/emotional (not that some debates don’t need an emotional input!) and knows how to keep the audience hooked to his words. the same goes for the deft way in which he handled his defence at the nightless city. so, yeah.

okay, so the subject i think wwx would teach has to be....

physics!!!!!

like this is the one that pops in my mind first and foremost and it fits wwx so well and not just in the realm of engineering. not that wwx’s inventing streak won’t be profoundly useful there but when it comes teaching the subject, when i say “physics” i mean the pure science. that would be wei wuxian’s jam!! he would come up with elaborate setups to simply but elegantly explain and exhibit a complex physics law or phenomenon. he would assign practical-oriented projects to his students and allow for fun which is sorely lacking in intensive pure science classes! he would make time to go over some relevant historic trivia about some theory a guy in the 18th century came up with and he would TOTALLY gossip about the scientists of the past and the scandals so many of them were engaged in. and the most important part!! he would conceptualise different and unique experiments for his class to practice for that part of their grade! alot of the time we forget how important the practical ingenuity of physics professors need to be when it’s not applied physics because the emphasis on the theoretical classes overshadows it. but wei wuxian would plan the practical course himself, even discuss the experimental configurations with his students, and design a whole booklet with them! and ykw?? he’d teach them coding too! which is one aspect of our technological era that i think wwx would excel at because there is so much craftiness required for coding and since coding is so essential for simulations and analysis in physics, wwx could teach them...some python, lol. 😭😭 also, i want to add, wei wuxian would 100% be that college professor with a league of papers published and held in high regard so that for each course he teaches, his own work could be a relevant reference which his students would find SO cool and maybe even funny.

okay, i’m done feeding you my physics professor!wwx agenda but i also think him teaching an ethics class would be fun. and also P.E. no but imagine a sociology course with wei wuxian? or a music major? the possibilities are literally endless but you probably won’t catch wwx anywhere near a culinary school.

Brazil and The Dream of Escape

I was delighted to find in the Xtras that the machine created to be used by Furfur to use to find out how many demons Shax could requisition for storming the bookshop was inspired by the movie Brazil. This is another nod to Monty Python member Terry Gilliam, who directed this film, and who almost directed the failed GO film in the 1990's.

I love this film. Always have. Yes, I was around when it came out in 1985. I'm that old. It's always been in my top 5 favourite films. And its totally relevant to Good Omens.

Brazil can be described as a dark dystopian story based on the novel 1984. It doesn't have a happy ending, but its funny, horrific, ludicrous, romantic and timelessly beautiful all at the same time. Its so iconic that when ever I see its influence in other productions its been unmistakable.

It stars Jonathan Pryce long before he was a James Bond villain or the head Sparrow in Game of Thrones, a comedic turn from Robert de Niro and a handful of other famous faces that you are bound to recognise, such Bob Hoskins, Ian Holm and Jim Broadbent.

Pryce, as Sam Lowry, lives in a world that is strictly controlled with paperwork that comes in multiple copies, where people are routinely arrested and tortured and a long running unexplained terrorist campaign sees bombs explode in the most random of places. Sam has dreams of a beautiful woman floating in the sky, and he is a sliver-armoured winged hero trying to rescue her. He eventually finds that she is real, and finds out her name through various means via his work and contacts. He tracks her down, but that is where it all starts to unravel as she is mixed up with an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.

Its easy to see the common themes and elements that run through the film with GO: the desire to run away and escape (that doesn't work,) a totalitarian authority controlling the masses, propaganda, piles of paperwork, an undercurrent of rebellion, torture and abuse, forbidden love between classes, a villain hidden in plain sight.

There is an art deco aesthetic to the film that also carries over to other films and shows it has influenced, and the busy work floor scene that stops on a dime to watch the tv show de jour while the boss isn't looking is one of the highlights of the film.

It was a reference of this that caught my eye in the Cohen Brothers modern fairy tale The Hudsucker Proxy, where they copied the busyness of the work floor for their mail room scenes, but also the art deco aesthetic. That's another film that is always in my top five films, and could go a round of comparisons with GO - its got time stoppage, an angel appearance and a near-godlike manipulator.

It also appears, surprisingly, in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The casino at Canto Bight is Brazil inspired, in the way its introduced to us, its decor and the music. I know some people hate this film because of what they did to Luke, but I love it, the whole thing is just utterly gorgeous to look at.

And if you've watched any of Loki recently, since S2 of that show finished not long ago, you would also seen some influence from Brazil in the retro look.

I love the classic art deco style. my grandparents had an art deco house that I spent many of my childhood hours in. The style itself is a clean, unadorned look, and often is meant to give a look of movement, speed or strength. A classic example of this is the Bentley, of course, which comes from the height of the art deco era in the 1930's.

Hell is the other place we see the Brazil influence in GO, where is looks like it's constantly several decades behind the times, with overhead projectors and manual typewriters and odd looking not-quite steampunk contraptions.

Brazil is available to stream on Disney at the moment, if you'd like to take a look. I highly recommend it, its one of those influential films that once you know it, you see its long reach in the most unexpected places.

calanthe looks pretty cool, you have more info about her?

Calanthe is a surviving basilisk adopted by Hunter and Willow in my WIP NextGen AU! Here's some quick information before I delve into that whole backstory: Name: Calanthe Species: Basilisk Pronouns: He/her Age: Roughly 14-16 Tracks: Potions and Plants primarily She was accidentally uncovered when Darius led a search party to clear out the old Emperor's Coven laboratory in search of lost information that they could record (with Hunter as a guide, since he knew where the labs were, and the basilisks were too afraid to go anywhere near the area). To everyone's surprise, Belos incubated another batch of basilisks after the first ones had escaped, but died before they could hatch. In the incubation process, without the proper care they needed, all other eggs died except for one: Calanthe. Hunter was the first to discover Calanthe, after being hit with intense memories of the lab and hallucinating. At least he thought he was hallucinating when a vision of himself appeared, turns out it was a basilisk moulding into his form. When he realised this was a physical being, he freaked out at first. Then he saw the black-rimmed blue eyes. The basilisk had imprinted on him, taking on his form as they may typically do as babies. It turned back into a small yellow python-patterned basilisk with blue eyes and light brown hair, to which Hunter and the group had taken it to the Healing Coven for inspection, and later Hunter and Willow had adopted the basilisk since 1. no one else could, and 2. it had already imprinted on them. In this AU, alongside primarily being a palisman carver, Hunter secondarily works with Darius to protect the Boiling Isles' children, creating better safety laws for all and putting more protection in place for the young ones. At the time he discovered and adopted Calanthe, Hunter would've probably been around 25 and was taking part as a student in a school that retaught important life lessons to those who didn't get to learn them. After finishing up with these classes, he transitioned to parenting schools in order to do his best for Calanthe. Willow is living the dream of leading the Emerald Entrails into constant victories, and reassures Hunter that he doesn't need to go to these schools, but he insists, as he absolutely despises the idea of becoming similar to Belos in any way. -Which Willow is actually quite proud of and inspired by.

Thanks to Willow and Hunter, Calanthe gets to live a perfectly normal and happy life, being able to embrace his basilisk side while being treated with the same love and normalcy that every child deserves. Calanthe has changed her appearance many times throughout her life, and still does till this very day, switching it up every now and then when she gets bored. Her primary/favourite appearance is taking inspiration from Willow's fringe, Hunter's face, and a mix between both of their body shapes. This is still a heavy WIP! However, some characters I am planning to add are: Luz + Amity's kids Boscha's child, possibly nonverbal Adrien Graye's neglected/forgotten daughter A Grudgby Team + Captain + Giving IV (now called Ivy) and III (now called Trip) more development and depth (the two basilisks seen in Watching and Dreaming) + King getting a MASSIVE growthspurt There will still be much more to come, once the ideas finally start to pop into my head. Hope this clears up some things! I'm happy you like her design, though it is still a WIP, such as everything else. I am still working on my Cinderkin AU too, in which I might make a 3rd AU combining these two for funsies at some point. It'd be sick to design Calanthe with Cinderkin features! :D

In case I haven't mentioned it before, these are the classes I assigned to the villagers: Gray -> Mercenary Tobin -> Cavalier Faye -> Pegasus Cavalier Kliff -> Archer

The way I picked the classes was one of each, and "who gets the most stat boosts out of it."

I've got this hubris about pegasus cavaliers and their near-limitless mobility, and I forget that they don't have a ton in the way of attack and defense. Putting them in the fray leads to them getting ganged up on.

Silque died a few times as well, but it's not like I actively sent her out in the fray.

I started to get a hang of the pegasus girls. For this battle, I had them hog a supply tower while the others slowly advanced.

Clair is cool. I like her majestic speech and her battle style. She's also one letter off from my OC Claire, so maybe that helps.

If there's anything I know from my mutuals, it's that the RGB trio rocks.

First impression of Python is that he exudes personality. Kind of abrasive at first, but that's some fun dialogue. As for Forsyth, I think his voice is silly in a grand way. I wish we got to talk to them a bit more before the final battle, but they're pretty great in battle. (Clive is also great in battle.)

Lukas learned the awesome art of swapping, which I used to keep Clair in a ring of safety after she did her turn and took a hit. (Sorry, Faye died to the terrors)

I got the hang of things by the final battle. Faye and Clair flew to the left door to open it. Python went through the right door and attacked the archers and soldiers while the stronger units passed through. Silque stayed in the lower left, waiting for anyone who needed to heal.

Faye finished off one of the weakened cavaliers, but then she ended up in Slayde's attack range and died. Tobin almost died, but Slayde missed. Gray dealt the finishing blow.

I learned what the turnwheel does a bit too late. By then, Clair got killed by the foe with the heavy armor, and I needed the entire turnwheel to get her back. Then Silque died instead. But by then, I saw the path to victory. The battle took 1.5 hours...

I love Gray and Tobin's banter. Like...

Tobin: I can't believe you're the same man who mocks the fact that I fight for gold. Gray: Yes, because it's gold. This is GIRLS. Don't you like girls? Tobin: I mean, I admit they're... not bad?

And after Alm's speech...

Tobin: Wow, that gave me goosebumps. Not bad, Alm. Not bad. Gray: Were you even listening to a thing he said? Your goosebump-giver just declared war on the whole damned empire! Tobin: I know, but I think it was a nice spee- WAIT, HE DID WHAT?! No, no. Come on, this isn't WAR, Gray. He's just going to kick them out. Gray: Riiiight. And then Emperor Rudolf will just send a fruit basket to apologize!

Beans told me all the characters' ages, and I was surprised they weren't a bit older. Maybe I should've guessed the villagers would be 17-18 based on the time between the prologue and now, but I though they were 20. I'm particularly surprised Kliff is the baby. ("The special hubris of a 15-year-old." Hey, doesn't that sound like Es? :P) Clair seemed like she'd be a tad older than the villagers (early 20s), and the RGB trio seemed to be late 20s. Anyway, that's just a little tangent.

I’ve been thinking about my Zoro Arc and I need to work out the villain. I know one is going to be a devil fruit user that is attacking Zoro’s old dojo/village. (The secondary villain is Koushiro Zoro’s old Sensei but I’m still deciding if he is an antagonist or a straight villain)

I want it to feel like a real arc with an enemy that is a threat. So I know I want the devil fruit user to have a zoan fruit. More specifically a mythical Zoan fruit. And I know I want them to be almost impossible to cut.

So where do you go when you need a monster? DnD monster manual of course! And I have some ideas.

We got two camps of thought humanoid monster and monster monsters

We will start off with the humanoids

First we have the death knight

This ideas actually wouldn’t be a zoan but would have a fruit like Brook that keeps him alive. Maybe he’s an old member of the shimotsuki family and is angry with Koushiro’s actions (his desire to hand of the soon to Zoro, someone out side of the family/giving Zoro the sword, and maybe the murder of Kuina👀 I’m really starting to lean into the idea that Koushiro killed his daughter)

This would mean that not only does Koushiro want to take Wado Ichimonji from Zoro but so does the creature he came to fight.

With an armor class of 20 and hit points of 180 it makes the. Near impossible to hit and hard to whittle down their health. It would be a long fight

The second camp is monster monster

First you have a Behir

They are creatures that are a mix between centipedes and crocodiles that can breath lighting.

I really like them because it means Luffy has an advantage against their lightning breath like he did in Skypia. But they are also known to physically coil around their victims like a python and consume them whole so he’s not completely safe.

Its armor class is 17 and hit points 168. A hard beast to fight but not impossible.

Second is the Bulette

They are known as land sharks and are massive predators that live to feed. They are tunnelers digging underground and popping back up.

With an armor class of 17 and hit points of 94 they are hard to hit but easy to take down if you can get some hard hits in.

And finally you have the Tarrasque

Tarrasques are crazy with armor class of 25 and a hit point of 676. Almost nothing can hit them and even if you did you would barely damage them.

Like I almost don’t want to uses it because of how broken it is. The thing is 50 feet tall and is known for its legendary destruction. Like it might actually be to hard to fight.

What do you guys think. I really like the Behir or a Death Knight.

I want the crew to have to fight while Zoro is also going through it emotionally. His job is to protect the crew. But the crew is here because of him. Fighting one of the craziest things they’ve seen. It’s not going down no matter what they do. The crew is getting hurt.

Title: Basil, Balconies, and a New Rome Revelation

Clarisse La Rue was no stranger to battle. She’d fought in wars, led armies, and stared death in the face more times than she could count. But nothing in her life as a warrior prepared her for living with Blake Rivers. Blake, her brilliant and annoyingly perfect wife, was everything Clarisse didn’t think she needed—soft-spoken but stubborn, creative but grounded, and utterly unshakable in her love for all things green and growing.

Their apartment near New Rome University had become a jungle, thanks to Blake’s Demeter heritage. The balcony was overrun with herbs, flowering vines, and even a small pomegranate tree. Inside wasn’t much better; terracotta pots covered every windowsill and shelf. Clarisse grumbled about tripping over planters, but secretly, she liked the way the apartment smelled—like mint and lavender, with a hint of citrus.

What Clarisse didn’t like was Basil.

The python, named ironically by Blake, had been a gift from a fellow Demeter kid. It was supposed to keep pests away from the plants, but instead, it had decided Blake was its personal heat lamp. It wasn’t uncommon for Clarisse to wake up in the middle of the night to find the massive snake curled around her wife, its tongue flicking lazily as if mocking her.

“Basil, get off the bed,” Clarisse growled one night, trying to shove the snake off Blake’s torso.

“He’s fine, Clarisse,” Blake mumbled, half-asleep.

“No, he’s not fine. He’s in the way!”

Basil flicked his tongue at her, unmoving. Clarisse grumbled under her breath about needing a monster-slaying license for their bedroom.

Despite the snake, life was good. Clarisse loved her job as a hands-on combat instructor at New Rome University. She’d always been better at action than words, and teaching kids how to fight—really fight—felt natural. Most of her students were eager to learn, though some had ulterior motives.

“Professor La Rue, do you have plans this weekend?” one bold student asked after class one day.

Clarisse rolled her eyes. “Yeah, my plan is to grade your terrible essays on shield formations. Get moving.”

She didn’t wear her wedding ring to work—too much risk of it getting damaged during sparring—but she’d never thought much about it. Her students saw her as a gruff, unattainable figure, and that was fine with her.

But everything changed one evening when a first-year named Mateo showed up at her office, looking sheepish.

“My roommate kicked me out,” he admitted, shuffling his feet. “I don’t have anywhere to go tonight.”

Clarisse sighed. She wasn’t good at this emotional stuff, but she couldn’t leave the kid stranded.

“Come on,” she said, grabbing her bag. “You can crash at my place for dinner until we figure something out.”

Blake greeted them at the door, her hair tied back in a messy bun, hands dusted with flour. She’d been baking—again.

“Hey, love,” she said, leaning up to kiss Clarisse on the cheek. “Who’s this?”

“This is Mateo,” Clarisse said gruffly. “He’s having some roommate drama. We’re feeding him.”

Mateo froze, eyes wide. “Wait… you’re married?”

Clarisse groaned. “Yeah. So what?”

“You’re married to her?” Mateo pointed at Blake, who was setting the table.

Blake laughed. “Surprised?”

“Uh… yeah? You don’t wear a ring or talk about her or—”

“Look, kid,” Clarisse cut him off. “I don’t owe anyone my life story. Now sit down before the food gets cold.”

Mateo ate dinner with them, but the news spread faster than wildfire. By the next day, the entire university knew that Clarisse La Rue, the legendary daughter of Ares, was married—and married to a daughter of Demeter, no less.

“Professor La Rue, is it true your wife grows your lunches?” one student asked during a sparring session.

“Professor, can we meet your wife?” another chimed in.

Clarisse barked at them to get back to work, but the questions didn’t stop. Blake, of course, thought it was hilarious.

“You’re a campus legend now,” she teased, watering the herbs on their balcony.

Clarisse scowled, leaning against the doorway. “I liked it better when they thought I was single and scary.”

Blake smiled, setting down her watering can. “Well, I like it better now. Maybe they’ll stop hitting on you.”

“Doubt it,” Clarisse muttered, but she couldn’t help the small smile tugging at her lips.

As much as she hated the attention, she couldn’t deny one thing: life with Blake—even with all the plants and that damn snake—was the best thing that had ever happened to her.

CRASHING OUT

So, I've been learning python for a few months now [per digi class rules for my interal I've been doing.] and during said internal, I was stuck on a loop/list part. [I had to do this to get acheived.

The point of the internal was to use python to code a quiz that included things like: - Multiple levels of questions - asking for name - asking if you want to play - asking if you want to see instructions - asking the questions - a working points system - a win/lose system. FOR THREE - FOUR DAYS, I WAS STUCK ON THE EXACT SAME LOOP FOR MY FIRST QUESTION. 3 DAYS AND NIGHTS OF SUFFERING 3 LONG DAYS AND NIGHTS. AND NO MATTER WHAT I DID IT WOULD PRINT OUT THE ENTIRE LISE INSTEAD OF ONE QUESTION. I WAS GOING TO GIVE UP. I WAS GOING TO TAKE THE FAIL. I SEARCHED UP TIPS ONE LAST TIME TODAY. I forgor to put commas in the list. THE FUCKING COMMAS. NEAR THE END OF CLASS I LOOKED AT ONE OF THE EXAMPLES AND I REALISED I DIDN'T HAVE COMMAS IN MY GODAMNED LIST. So now i'm no longer stuck :)

A class of curves

During my thesis, researching ways of flow around rocks and ships near the surface of water, I found a set of equations that can be used to model these weirder shapes. One example was the lemon curve, which you saw as the cricket ball simulation I showed earlier. The other is a generalised version of these that allows one to customise the location of bumps on the surface of the solid. The following plots were made in python.

It is important that when you model obstacles, you do so with at least second-differentiable functions, which means that they can be differentiated at least twice without behaving badly.

This is due to the nature of equations used to model fluids, called the Navier Stokes equations, which is based on Newton's 2nd law of motion, the force applied on an object is proportional to the acceleration (which is where the 2nd derivative comes into play).

it was hansa's father that wanted to move to america, to a small supernatural community in pennsylvania, where hansa was born and raised. protectors, hansa was put into martial arts classes very young, expected to take them as seriously as she did school. while her dad wanted her to study muay thai, the gorgon always favored her mother's side and instead leaned towards wing chun, which was better for her small stature anyway. while always outspoken, sometimes she could be unnecessarily so, much to the dismay of her father. her childhood best friend was the sweet to her sour, though, the bubbles to her buttercup; it was a relationship that she thought could withstand all others, the sibling she never had. the child had this ridiculous notion that they were soulmates. that was why the betrayal hurt so much. she didn't mean to do permanent damage. the rumors, her girlfriend ... she was only fifteen when it all just ... happened. perhaps if it was only one person things would have been different — but it wasn't. her family moved from the home they built, shamed and exiled after their daughter killed two undeserving girls. and hansa never let anyone get quite so close again. unfortunately, things never quite felt the same with her parents either. she felt guilty, knowing she caused their lives to be uprooted and as soon as she turned eighteen, she left. never staying one place for long, hansa has found herself in portum after seven years living a pretty nomadic lifestyle. after a year, the longest she's spent in one place since childhood, the gorgon has finally began to let her walls down, though still fears her own self sometimes, never wanting to let her emotions control her and lead to her hurting an innocent again.

hi. i had a very similar experince to trying to look through the code camp scams and everything online and not living near anything useful. if you can find an online real college thats what i did, granted its a community college and an associates but. other than that, don't sleep on utilizing chatgpt to teach you. thats how i learn all of my material. you can ask it questions or say "can you teach me about x", and if you dont like its response you can say things like "make that more simple" or "make that interactive". but helpful tip, all programming languages basically do the same things and work in very, very similar ways. if you just learn the fundamentals of programming you can just translate that to any language. in my opinion, the basics to learn are: the structures of programming (sequential, conditional, iterative), variables, datatypes (integer, string, float, etc)(in python those are it), conditional statements(these are those if-else things you see), iterative aka loops(do..while, for x in list, do until, etc), functions(keep em one purpose), passing data. i would say these are the fundamentals. every language does it (besides html bc thats not a programming language but just a mark up language), so once you know about the conditonal structure for example, just find out "how do i use this in x language". if you are learning python now, its a great language to learn about programming and you've probably realized by now that people most often use it in an object oriented way, but you don't have to and don't have to learn about classes or objects if you don't have the fundamentals down yet. i hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask me

Oh I 100% agree with this advice. After looking for a long, long time, I realised the most legitimate courses were from 'real' colleges and education suppliers that offered 'brick n mortar' schooling as well as e-learning.

I'm definitely going to utilise the free resources online and then work towards building a profile and generally seeing what the jobs online look for and work towards that alongside the usual path of learning :)

Also, I love how supportive folk generally are in this area of learning. I knew it would be competitive, especially when it comes to getting a job in a year or so...but seeing folk lift each other up instead of put each other down is heart-warming on so many levels. It makes me think I've found my correct career path :)

6 Ways to Show Genuine Interest in Your Intended College Major

Most universities are not particularly interested in students who approach college as the 13th grade—just the next step on a path laid out for them by their parents since before they were born. They instead seek out students who demonstrate passion and curiosity, especially about their chosen field of study.

In your college applications, it’s important that you demonstrate your interests (not just state what they are, but show them at work in your life) and that those interests inform your prospective major. You can and should demonstrate your interests in your college essays, your activities lists, and even in your transcripts.

Here are some specific tips on how to prove you’re invested in your intended major:

1. Take AP, IB, and honors courses in that field

If your high school offers advanced courses in a field you’re passionate about, take those courses. Honors, AP, and IB credits demonstrate that you’ve devoted ample time and energy to a given field.

I would also recommend approaching advanced classes from the opposite direction. If you’re like most high school students, you’re not yet sure what you want to major in or what your academic interests are. Take advanced classes in subjects that you perform well in. You might find that these courses create entirely new interests for you that weren’t there before. 

Throughout high school and college, you will likely develop new passions and a deeper understanding of what you love. Advanced courses are one of the ways in which you can discover what those passions might be.

2. Join a student organization … or start your own

Interested in computer science? Join a coding club at your school. Or, if none exists, create one. If you’re interested in something—whether it be coding, poetry, chess, or pottery—chances are there are other students at your school who are interested, too.

You can demonstrate passion for a field or cause by joining an organization on campus and working your way up the ranks to, say, secretary or even president. You can also demonstrate initiative and leadership by starting an organization of your own.

Not sure where to start? Ask a counselor or teacher at your school about how you might get something new off the ground. With the right support, you can develop your interests and set yourself up for a strong college application.

3. Join a club & volunteer

You can also look beyond the walls of your school for club and volunteer opportunities. Join a mystery book club or a Spanish conversation club at your local library branch. Volunteer as an elementary school assistant at your local school district. There are so many possibilities that you can find with just a quick Google search.

4. Take free online courses

There are a ton of free online courses on subjects ranging from psychology to political philosophy, from computer science to principles of accounting.

You can find courses on the iTunes U app, many of which include syllabi and course readings alongside lectures. There’s a drove of Massive Open Online Courses available, many of which will even provide a certificate for completing the course. MIT hosts a wide range of free courses online, such as this Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python.

Many of these free online courses are offered by prestigious universities and taught by some of the most renowned faculty in their respective fields. By completing one of these courses, you can get a head start on university-level work and develop a new or existing passion.

5. Contact an expert

Do you live near a university? If so, reach out to faculty members to ask if they might be interested in your volunteering as a lab or research assistant, or even if you could stop by just to ask them some questions during their office hours. You might receive no response from a number of professors, but you would be surprised by how many would be more than happy to at least discuss what they do and why.

Along the same lines, if you’re passionate about business, reach out to local business owners. You might even find opportunities for employment. At the very least, you’ll gain vital insights into the kind of work you might want to do in college and beyond.

6. Read, watch, and listen on your own

Subscribe to The New Yorker, or The Economist, or Wired, or any number of magazines focused on literature and culture, or economics, or technology, or whatever it is you want to major in. Watch documentaries. Listen to podcasts. Finding media that will fuel your passion and leave you informed has never been easier. 

The kind of knowledge you can gain from reading, watching, and listening first-hand cannot be matched by second-hand commentary. No visit to Sparknotes, or advice from your uncle, or other kind of second-hand knowledge can stand in for the real thing. Hearing or reading about the thing is no match for hearing or reading or doing the thing itself.

With a novel in your hand or even a computer science course on your screen, don’t just be a passive consumer—take notes not only on the content, but your reactions to it. What makes you excited? What leaves you confused? What gets you frustrated?

By staying engaged in a field of study, you shouldn’t only learn new information. You should also learn a lot about yourself.

Snakes (Class 1A)

"WHO THE HELL WENT INTO MY ROOM." I yelled running down the stairs making everyone look at me. "Ok, Calm the fuck down." Bakugou yelled from his place on the couch. Most of the Baku squad and the Deku squad had been down in the common room or at the dining table. "Thats a bit hard to do since Nessy is out." "Who is Nessy?" Mina shrieked before she and Denki swiftly climbed onto the closest thing to them, which in Denki's case was Bakugou which was definitely was scarier than whatever escaped. "Nessy is my very beautiful and very venomous albino mamba." I say as I walk closer to the couch. "Why do you even have snakes?" Hagakure asked from somewhere in the kitchen. "It's for my Quirk, I need to constantly consume venom or poison so I can use it. Thats why I tell everyone to stay out of my room because everything in there can kill you guys. Thats also why Bakugou won't let me near the kitchen." I mumble the last part. Suddenly a loud almost girlish scream could be heard from somewhere upstairs followed by a scared Mineta barreling down the stairs screeching about a huge snake in Jiro's room. 

I quickly made my way accompanied by Jiro to her room. We were searching Jiro's room for about 20 minutes before we found Nessy curled up in Jiro's bass drum. I held out my arm and Nessy quickly slithered up my arm making herself comfortable around my neck. I walked over Jiro so she could pet Nessy. Nessy was definitely a very dangerous snake, but she is one of my calmest snakes. Me and Jiro made our way back to the common room. 

"Find your damn snake?" Bakugou asked as he saw us entering. I simply answered with a "Jipp" while pointing at my neck where Nessy had curled up, half hiding in my hair. A few shrieks and squeaks could be heard, while some of the others came closer to look at Nessy. "She is a very calm snake despite her dangerous side, so if you guys want you can pet her." I said with a big smile on my face. Mina slowly made her way closer to look at Nessy, Nessy must have sensed the attention she was getting because at that point she poked her head out from my hair staring at Mina. "O yeah guys did you know pythons eats small animals, almost the size of Mineta, by wrapping its around body around their prey and suffocating it." I said making sure I said it loud enough for Mineta to hear. "It's really cool, I have a beautiful python if you guys ever want to see." Mineta rushed up the stairs and slamming his door shut, causing all the girls to start laughing. "Tho but seriously guys please stay out of my room, there is a lot in there that could kill you guys. Tho I don't have a python they aren't venomous but if they are big enough, they will eat a full-grown adult. " I said in a bit more of a serious tone earing a bunch of nods from my fellow classmates. I made my way back to my room to continue feeding my snakes.

🌹 (rose) - What does your oc find attractive in other people? Are these traits found in their friends and/or romantic partners? Are they found in themselves?

🧣(scarf) - What comforts your oc? Is it an item? An action? A person? Whatever it is, how any why does it comfort them? 

Python 

🌹 (rose): Strong wills. Python believes having a strong will and conviction are important traits. He used to be a little hesitant compared to Typhon when he was younger but really grew into his own once he found grew his own iron will. He tends to respect/be drawn to people who also have it. Kyu really drew him in since she was graceful as a flower, but willful as a mountain when needed. 

🧣(scarf): Kyu. When just being near her makes him become more calm and think more clearly. He will freely admit he’s better when she’s around. They both love each other, but while Kyu could probably survive with Python, Python definitely can’t function at his best without Kyu.

Kyu

🌹 (rose): Love, particularly for family. Growing up in Takamagahara Kyu considered family ties (blood ties or not) one of the most important things. Seeing how dedicated Python was to the monsters of Mewni who he considered ‘family’ in his own was part of what drew her to him.

🧣(scarf): Her shamisen. It was a gift from Amaterasu and it reminds her of her ties from home. Makes her feel close to Amaterasu and the others. 

Echidna

🌹 (rose): Power. Echidna set out to be the ruler of Mewni before she joined the Ten, and she actually clashed with Typhon a few times before she finally came into the fold. Couldn’t help but kind of be attracted by how strong he was lol.     

🧣(scarf): Nothing. She never let herself become overly attached to anything or anyone. Not that she didn't feel. She did genuinely love Typhon, Scylla, and the rest of the Ten, but she was ready to temporarily turn off those feeling if she thought it was for the better of herself or the Ten’s goals.

Argus

🌹 (rose): Emotionally, youthful vigor! Loves seeing his kids and grandkids go wild and just go after what they want or dive headfirst into something. Physically… he’s the pervy old man stereotype, so pretty sure you could guess. 

🧣(scarf): His staff. There was nothing actually special about it, it was just a random stick Typhon and Python gave him when they were kids. 

Orthus

🌹 (rose): Being energetic. Definitely would want a mate who could match his energy, and he always loves when his friends will put as much effort into their play time as he does. (Probably loves playing with Rain or Vander in the future AU for this reason).

🧣(scarf): The club Typhon took from Heracles when he defended Orthrus from him. He keeps it buried near the forest of death. Only he knows where. He digs it up every now and then and brings it to Typhon so they can play fetch before burying it again. 

Kruger

🌹 (rose): Class and honor. Kruger thinks someone who can uphold a certain demeanor and character is someone worth respecting (Typhon can be rowdy but he’s honorable when it counts). He definitely strives to be honorable and classy himself. 

🧣(scarf): Bloodedge. He feels like he’s missing a part of himself without it. The sword has a will of its own and has bonded with him. Barely lets anyone but him even wield it.

Branch

🌹 (rose): Kindness. Branch loves seeing a kind or sweet spirit. When he joined the war against the mewmans he couldn’t exactly afford to be all that kind to his enemies, but he reasoned he had to be brutal so the rest of his people could preserve their own kind spirits. He admired his sister Blossom for being kinder than anyone else, and feels the same way about Bloom. 

🧣(scarf): The Crown of thorns he wears on his head. It was made by his former lover Imena. He used to wear one with flowers, but she thought since he was going into battle he could use one a little more ‘intimidating’. 

Matrona 

🌹 (rose): Strength. She’s battle crazy so whether plantonically or romantically she’s totally drawn to strong people. She’s so proud all of her descendants ended up being so strong. 

🧣(scarf): No any one thing or person in particular, but she does feel much more comfortable when she’s with the rest of the Ten. I also think she’s have a soft spot for Diane in the future au. (Yet another person to spoil her).

Scylla 

🌹 (rose): Truthfulness and loyalty. After being lied to for so long she doesn’t even want to entertain being lied to, and she doesn’t let a lot of other people get close since she’s used to being abandoned/shunned. Gadfly has literally never lied to her, and he’s stupidly loyal to her (they love the Ten but if they had to choose between the rest of the Ten and each other, they’d choose each other in a heartbeat).  

🧣(scarf): Her earrings. She used to keep them as a reminder to keep up her hatred of the waterfolk, but after learning her mother actually cared about her she thinks of them more fondly. Not that she’d told anyone about it.

Gadfly

🌹 (rose): Loyalty. Gadfly is ride or die and he only respects people who are the same. He will literally bury anyone if it’s for Scylla’s sake, and he knows she’ll do the same. 

🧣(scarf): Scylla. Gadfly is not actually insane, but he feels like he can only really think clearly when he’s with her. He could literally fuck off anywhere if it’s with her.  

Kitsune

🌹 (rose): Adventurous spirit! He appreciates people with a sense of wonder and adventure (he’s a very bad influence on Nia and her friends, just like Typhon was on him). Definitely filled with that himself.

🧣(scarf): His swords. Gifts from Amaterasu, he felt like he could call himself a true warrior/titan when he was bestowed with them, and that he was a real part of his mother’s heritage.
